The purpose of the MSc. Plant Breeding and Seed Systems programme is to produce mid-career level scientists who meet the immediate human resource crop improvement and related discipline demands of the public and private sector. This purpose will be fulfilled through research and educational programmes that link advances in fundamental and applied biological sciences to contemporary development issues.
Program Objectives
The general objective of the degree program is to develop a cadre with capacity to enhance the productivity of crops through effective interventions in the seed value chain through development of improved cultivars.
The specific objectives are to:
- Train scientists who are able to plan and execute a plant-breeding program, create new knowledge and manage agronomic research in an effective, cost effective and efficient manner.
- Impart the skills necessary to develop a seed multiplication system that delivers high quality seed.
- Impart the necessary soft skills to interact effectively at all levels of the plant breeding and seed value chains at national, regional and international levels.
- Develop capacity to contribute to the science of plant breeding through publication in peer-reviewed journals.
