Welcome to the Makerere University Regional Centre for Crop Improvement (MaRCCI), a World Bank designated African Regional Centre for Plant Breeding Training hosted at the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES). Masters and PhD Degrees
Makerere University was awarded the task of training Master’s and Doctoral students in plant breeding, seed systems and biotechnology, which uses scientific assessment and manipulation to produce better crops – varieties with higher yields, that respond well to climate or disease challenges and improve nutritional content.
127 master’s level and 57 doctoral level students from 20 African countries have passed through this program.
Laboratory Facilities
Facilities assigned to MaRCCI include a classroom and office building, research fields, screenhouses, a biotechnology laboratory (microbiology, and bioinformatics units), gene bank, (a cold store and seed handling facility), seed laboratory, and a temperature-controlled growth room. Many other research facilities are available through Makerere University, NARO, and other cooperators.
The purpose of the facilities available to MaRCCI is to serve the needs of individuals and institutions involved in improving food and nutrition security

Research Overview
MaRCCI has a research wing headed by Dr. Isaac, O. Dramadri, with Dr. Sharon, M. Tusiime as the Seed Systems Specialist. The research is supported by a Laboratory technologist (Ms. Habibah Nalule) two Field Technicians (Mr. Herbert Badara, Mr. Moses Ebong), and one seed/genebank/biotechnology Technician (Mr. Jordan Akoragye). Oversight of the research program is provided by the Centre Director, Dr. Richard Edema.
